The Countdown Begins: What to Expect from UEFA Women’s Euro 2025

UEFA Women's Euro 2025

The UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 is almost here! Here’s a guide on what to expect as the countdown begins. Switzerland is hosting the event for the first time, which runs from July 2 to 27. Sixteen national teams from across Europe will take part. Spain enters the event as a favorite, having dominated Europe in recent years. England will want to defend its title as reigning champions. Germany is another contender that cruised through qualifying with a 3-0 defeat by Iceland as the only blip.

The format

In the qualification campaign, 51 teams were looking for a place at the tournament, but only 16 were chosen. Switzerland qualifies automatically as the host country.

The final draw for groups was held in Lausanne on December 16, 2024. In Group A are Switzerland, Finland, Iceland, and Norway. Group B consists of Portugal, Spain, Italy, and Belgium. Sweden, Denmark, Poland, and Germany are in Group C. Group D is a tough one, consisting of England (defending champs), France, Netherlands, and Wales. Wales has qualified for the first time.

During the group stage, there will be two matches a day, and from the knockouts, there’s one game a day. The top two from each of the four groups will advance to the quarterfinals, then the semis, with the grand finale in Basel on July 27.

In the US, online sports betting has become legal in many states. PA online sports betting is legal, and sports bettors can place their bets on the championships.

The stadiums, tickets, and how to watch

Eight stadiums across Switzerland will host the games. The first game will be in Thun at the Stockhorn Arena. Iceland and Finland will face each other in Group A’s opening game. The final will take place at St. Jakob-Park in Basel. The large soccer venue has a capacity of over 38,500. It is one of the most iconic stadiums in the country.

Fans can purchase one of the 7,000 tickets available at the eight different venues. They will be sold in stages via national soccer associations and directly from UEFA’s official ticket site.

Those who can’t watch the games in person can still watch them. In Europe, broadcasters like BBC/ITV and Disney+ will carry the games. Fans in many other countries will be able to stream the matches live. Today, verified users can do so safely online without having to worry about issues like identity theft.

Official mascot and match ball

Maddli, a Saint Bernard puppy, is the official mascot. Madeleine Boll, the first licensed female soccer player in Switzerland, inspired the name. Saint Bernards are rescue dogs in Switzerland, known for their bravery and gentle nature.

Adidas is the supplier of the official match ball. It features iconography of architectural landmarks from all eight host cities.

The teams

England’s Lionesses were the world champions in 2022. It will be tricky for them to retain their title with the Spanish and German teams in good form. They have a new goalkeeper, Hannah Hampton, and plenty of firepower with the likes of Alessia Russo and Alex Greenwood. The first game for them will be on July 5 when they face France at Stadion Letzigrund in Zurich.

Spain is the top-ranked team after its win against England in the 2023 FIFA World Cup final. However, being in a group with Belgium, Italy, and Portugal is likely to be challenging, as these teams have all been improving.

The rise of the Welsh team and keeper Olivia Clark, from McDonald’s worker to national starter, is an inspiring one. Coach Rhian Wilkinson wants to boost women’s soccer in Wales and is pushing the squad to new heights.

What makes this event special?

Women’s soccer keeps growing, and the impetus from the 2022 UEFA Euro and the 2023 Women’s World Cup has created more attention and boosted attendance. This event is likely to be one of the most fan-friendly with the modern infrastructure and high-quality stadiums. With new heroes emerging and fresh talent on the English side, there will be stories and stars not seen before.

With this event on the European soccer calendar nearly here, anticipation is growing. Both fans and the media are buzzing. Competition is likely to be fierce in all four groups, but particularly in groups B and D.

UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 is more than just a sporting event — it’s a celebration of talent, teamwork, and growing the women’s game. Fans can get ready for a month of soccer magic in beautiful Switzerland.
