Regardless of your background, Halloween is a festival that you remember from an early age, my favourite was trick & treat when all the neighbours would shower us with candy and chocolate, as we all sang wrapped up in warm clothes. Not so cold here Down Under though, so you won’t need to wrap up.
Where did Halloween originate?
The general consensus is that Halloween originated in the Celtic culture; when the harvest was complete and the evenings drew darker, the Celts celebrated the end of their year, the cycle of birth and death brought with it a few superstitions; ghost were thought of as real entities and this lead to rituals to remember the deceased and that is how Halloween emerged. Families would leave food and drink out for their ancestors, as most believed their spirit would return to the earthly realm at this time of year to join in the celebrations. This was happening in the 10th century we know, due to cave art and as time passed the festival developed and the popularity grew. 16th century England
This was the period when the tradition gained traction and people believed that by celebrating their deceased ancestors, ghosts would leave them alone, which is one of the reasons Halloween gained in popularity. One practice was to dress up as ghouls and ghosts, which was believed to please spirits and hey presto, Halloween was born!
All Harrow Tide
The period from October 31st to November 2nd was christened as All Hallow Tide, a time to pay respects to ancestors, this focused mainly on saints and martyrs. As time passed, other European countries joined this festival and when the Pilgrim Fathers arrived in America, they brought Halloween with them. Europe also began to embrace Halloween as a festival to make it what it is today, a global festival.
